Sovereign Capability Group has appointed Diane Smith-Gander AO as its new Chair.
Smith-Gander has a distinguished career covering executive and non-executive roles and plans to leverage her extensive experience and strategic vision to advance Sovereign’s mission of enhancing Australia’s defence capabilities.
“I believe it’s important to contribute as an Australian to the things that matter,” she said. “The opportunity to improve Australia’s sovereign capability resonated deeply with me. My background in directorships, particularly in companies serving defence, makes this role a perfect fit. I’m excited to bring my experience to Sovereign.”
Smith-Gander said the newly-formed company was uniquely positioned to meet the growing demand for digital technology and naval electronics sustainment in Australia.
“Doubling our surface fleet and increasing our naval assets is a challenge that requires a whole-of-nation response,” she said. “Sovereign is poised to make a meaningful contribution to this effort, leveraging our assets, panel memberships and deep client relationships.”

The Sovereign board will guide the management teams in building a solid strategic vision with clear growth priorities,” Smith-Gander said. “With over 40 years in business, I’ve seen all sorts of strategic plans, and I’m confident in supporting Sovereign’s execution of a robust strategy.”
She said her board and management team were committed to strengthening Australia’s defence infrastructure.
“Human capital is the most important intangible asset a country can possess, and Sovereign’s cohort of skilled technologists plays a crucial role in this. Our combined capabilities, deep client relationships, and the ability to deliver efficiently and effectively make Sovereign a strong and viable entity in the defence industry,” she said.
As Smith-Gander steps into the new role, her immediate focus is on supporting Sovereign’s Group CEO in leading the first phase of growth.
“I’m here to listen, integrate useful elements of the Group and explore opportunities for further industry consolidation. Over the next 12 to 24 months, we have a real appetite to extend our reach through thoughtful acquisitions, increasing our relevance to defence and commercial operators in Australia, New Zealand and the US.”
Facilitated by Australian private equity firm Whiteoak, the merger of Insitec and Electrotech Australia will see Sovereign achieve close to $100 million in revenue this year.
