Japanese technology company TOYO Corporation has purchased a second on-premises quantum computer from IQM Quantum Computers, with the company saying it plans to make the systems available to universities, startups and researchers as part of Japan’s broader quantum ecosystem.
According to the companies, the new system is an IQM Spark quantum computer, to be installed at TOYO’s R&D centre in Kiba, Tokyo. It is expected to be operational in early 2027 and used for education, algorithm validation, and verification activities.
The purchase follows TOYO’s earlier acquisition of an IQM Radiance 20-qubit quantum computer. IQM said it plans to install that system at the end of 2026 at the Global Research and Development Center for Business by Quantum-AI technology (G-QuAT), operated by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), with operations also expected in early 2027.
IQM said it will deliver both systems by the end of 2026. Once operational, the companies said the systems would be available to domestic companies, organisations, research institutes and universities, and used as a testbed for evaluating components and related technologies for superconducting quantum computers under operating conditions.
The announcement positions the deployments as aligned with Japan’s national quantum strategy, which targets 10 million domestic quantum users and ¥50 trillion in quantum-generated economic value by 2030.
In a statement, IQM CEO and co-founder Jan Goetz said TOYO intended to share access to the systems for educational purposes across Japan’s quantum ecosystem. TOYO president and CEO Toshiya Kohno said the company aims to support talent development, technology validation, use case creation and research through the two systems.
IQM also linked the deal to its broader commercial activity, noting it began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and Helsinki Stock Exchange in July 2026, and that it has reported an order backlog above €102 million, with 26 full-stack systems sold and 17 delivered globally.
