Hayo, a digital infrastructure provider, has launched a Number Verification API designed to let mobile network operators verify mobile numbers at the network level as an alternative to SMS one-time passwords.
In a statement dated 14 October 2026, the company said the API verifies a number directly through the SIM and operator network without user input, aiming to reduce fraud linked to SMS-based authentication, including phishing and interception. Hayo said the product complies with CAMARA and GSMA standards and is TS.43 compliant for interoperability.
The company argued that authentication activity is shifting towards over-the-top applications, flash calls and APIs that bypass traditional operator messaging channels, contributing to what it described as operator revenue leakage. It also said SMS OTP has become a “low-margin, high-friction” channel, and positioned its network-based approach as a way for operators to take a larger role in identity verification.
“Authentication value is moving away from message delivery and towards identity verification,” said Feraz Ahmed, CEO at hayo. “The Number Verification API creates a faster, more secure experience for customers, while enabling operators to monetize authentication events that already cross their network today. It’s a huge opportunity and we’re excited to bring it to more of our customers in Africa, the Middle East and across the globe.”
According to the company, the API works by routing authentication requests through a secure API layer into the operator network, using SIM and network data to confirm identity in real time. Hayo said this removes the need for codes or additional apps and works across devices.
“Operators already own the strongest identity asset in the ecosystem: the SIM card. They just lack the infrastructure to monetize it,” said Boaz Yaya, Director of Operator Relations at hayo. “With the Number Verification API, they can turn that asset into a high-margin, network-driven service that customers can trust. Enterprises benefit from higher conversion rates and lower fraud, while users get a seamless, zero-friction login experience. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”
Hayo said the Number Verification API is part of a broader portfolio of identity and network APIs, including SIM Swap Detection, Device Location, KYC Match and Quality on Demand. The company said it offers the service as a fully managed product, with operators able to launch without upfront infrastructure investment.
