Wasabi Technologies has introduced Covert Copy, a new cloud-storage security feature designed to create an invisible and undeletable duplicate of critical data, providing an additional safeguard against ransomware and insider threats. The company says the patent-pending technology strengthens traditional air-gap strategies by generating a hidden copy of selected storage buckets that cannot be viewed, accessed or altered without multi-user authentication.
Covert Copy forms part of Wasabi’s cyber-resilience portfolio and is intended to protect organisations as attackers increasingly target backup and storage infrastructure. The company said cybercriminals are focusing on backup systems to maximise disruption, particularly as enterprise reliance on data continues to grow with AI-driven workloads. Forecasts from IDC indicate global security spending will increase by more than 12 per cent in 2025.
Wasabi said Covert Copy takes immutability a step further by ensuring that the protected data is not just locked, but completely undetectable to anyone inside a corporate network. The copy is logically air-gapped and cannot be deleted or encrypted, even if an attacker gains administrative access to the main environment. Multi-user approval is required to access or recover the protected data.
David Boland, vice president of cloud strategy at Wasabi, said organisations face mounting regulatory and internal pressure to ensure data cannot be tampered with or destroyed. He said Covert Copy offers a simpler and more affordable approach compared with multi-tool strategies required by many cloud platforms.
Implementation does not require complex rule sets; users select their storage and initiate protection through a streamlined interface. Wasabi said the feature supports compliance obligations across highly regulated sectors including healthcare, finance and government, aligning with requirements under HIPAA, GDPR, UK GDPR and SEC data-protection rules.
Covert Copy complements existing Wasabi security capabilities such as object lock, encryption, replication and multi-user authentication. It is now available through Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage at no additional cost via the company’s resellers and managed service partners.
